What’s With All the Hate?

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
-Martin Luther King Jr.

Recently it’s been in the news that buses in New York City will be running anti-Islam ads that are sponsored by one of the most bigoted groups known to man, the AFDI. The group’s aim is to spread anti-Islamic propaganda in the name of preserving American values they believe will be in danger with the spread of Islam.

Number one, I think that the 100,000 dollars used to place those ads is a sorry waste of money that could have been used for worthwhile charitable organizations rather than slandering an entire religion. Another thing, blatant discrimination against an entire group of minorities is just plain wrong. It is against basic human decency to spread hate and instill violence among different groups of people.

What really grinds my gears is the fact that someone can hate another person solely for the fact that they are considered “different”. Just because they aren’t your ideal white, straight, Christian Americans, doesn’t mean you can treat them like they are something other than fellow citizens and humans.

The very idea of hating someone without truly knowing them is beyond my grasp. How could anyone be filled with so much hate for a group or groups of people that are unlike themselves, that they do not truly understand? How could anyone dare go and hurt or kill innocent people in the name of preservation of what they find to be the ideal way of life, isolated from integration, diversity and change? The thought of somebody trying to hurt me simply because I am not of white skin color or of the Christian faith makes my heart sink.

Why is it so difficult to preach and practice LOVE for our fellow human beings?

Something that I still cannot understand is the fact that there is people in places of power willing to advocate for these hate groups while condoning their actions. I don’t understand how spreading bigoted ideas, abusing the First Amendment and committing hate crimes is completely alright when a certain groups of people do it but not others.

If I could just get someone to explain to me where this hatred comes from, I could rest my head at night and not worry about why I must prove I am the model minority to be tolerated in some parts of this society and not others. Sometimes we get tired of this treatment, and most of the time, we wish you could step into our shoes and feel what we feel.
